The national careers service helps our young people with adult support to navigate the potential the world of work and what there is to offer and explore all the opportunities available to them. Our staff may use motivational interviewing and emotion coaching to help our students to set goals and focus their career choices with a pathway to success post 16.

Our staff communicate regularly with the Local Authority and directly with providers about local events, open days at colleges and apprenticeship conventions. This information is regularly displayed and shared with pupils and their families and whenever possible trips planned with the school to visit these events and colleges to support our young people to make informed decisions about their post 16 destinations and support their smooth transitions.

All subjects include as much as possible of their subject content to ‘the real world’ for our students so they may not only learn the national curriculum content and life skills but also relate this to the opportunities available to them in multiple fields of study and career choices.

We endeavour to give all our students as many opportunities and experiences as possible within their education. When able, visitors may be included in the curriculum to share their experiences and enrichment experiences and trips to events and local businesses to help our young people make informed decisions about their careers and what they enjoy and would like to pursue.

 Key Stage 4 our students may have the opportunity to access some work experience. This is scaffolded according to the individual needs of our young people. It may include a short but intensive work experience placement or a longer term arrangement with an employer than may lead to an apprenticeship post 16. All work experience opportunities and safely planned with the support of NYBEP and school.

All students are supported in any visits to colleges or post 16 provisions to experience a taste of what the provisions have to offer with either staff or school supporting the pupil and their family. Before transitioning to post 16 provision our staff work with the staff from the provision to plan an appropriate and smooth transition both before and after leaving year 11 or whilst beginning any enrichment accessed from an alternative provision or college in key stage 4.

All pupils receive independent advice and guidance about their career options annually from year 9 to year 11. They are offered a meeting with a careers expert who is experienced in local and national options and entry requirements for courses and provisions. The pupils have an opportunity to ask and pursue any careers including apprenticeships and studying at multiple levels.  Career action plans are produced from these meetings and shared with staff, the pupil and their families so that they may be supported to work on any actions to support their possible career choices throughout the year.
